Corey Walden on Celtics' summer league roster

Updated: 07/03/2015 - Former Eastern Kentucky University guard Corey Walden will play for the Boston Celtics’ summer league team, earning a chance to play his way onto an NBA roster. Walden will be one of 13 players on the Celtics roster. The team, which began practice on Wednesday at the Celtics’ facility in Waltham, Massachusetts, begins its six-game summer schedule on Monday. Boston will play three games in the Utah Summer League starting with the Jazz on Monday at 10 p.m. ET. The Celtics will face Philadelphia on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET before closing out play in Utah against San Antonio on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET. The team will then play three games in the Vegas Summer League, facing Portland (July 11), Philadelphia (July 12) and Miami (July 14). The summer league tournament is slated for July 15-20. Boston’s summer league roster also includes 2015 draft picks Terry Rozier, R.J. Hunter, Jordan Mickey and Marcus Thornton, along with current Celtics Marcus Smart and James Young. Walden was chosen as a Lou Henson All-American, a Lefty Driesell Defensive All-American, first team All-Ohio Valley Conference, OVC Defensive Player of the Year and first team All-District 19 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) following his senior season. Walden closed out his career as one of the best in program history. In just three years as a Colonel, he scored 1,518 points, the eighth most-ever by a Colonel. The two-time OVC Defensive Player of the Year also broke the EKU career and single season records for steals. His 236 career steals broke Jamie Ross’ mark of 221 and is the fifth most-ever in OVC history. Walden finished the 2014-15 season with 99 steals, which also broke the record of 87 held by Ross and is the second-most ever in one season by an OVC player. During his senior season Walden averaged 18.6 points, four rebounds, 3.8 assists and 3.1 steals per game. He shot 55 percent from the field and nailed 82 percent of his free throws. He was the only player ranked in the top-10 in the OVC in scoring (2nd), field goal percentage (7th), assists (7th) and steals (1st). Walden leads the nation with an average of 3.09 steals per game and ranks 35th in scoring.
