TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Storm of the Arena Football League have acquired former Kentucky quarterback Shane Boyd.
“Shane is a dual-threat quarterback,” said vice president of football operations Jeff Gooch. “Having him in our arsenal will help us build upon our offensive success from last season.”
Boyd (6-foot-1, 220 lbs., University of Kentucky) spent the 2012 AFL season with the Milwaukee Mustangs, having success in both the passing and running games.
“I am honored to be a part of an organization that is first class and represent a great city in which I can call home,” said Boyd. “I am excited to assist in getting the Storm back to championship form and appreciate the leadership Derrick Brooks, [head coach] Dave Ewart and the rest of the staff has shown throughout this process.”
He began his professional career in the National Football League as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Tennessee Titans. He then spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Arizona Cardinals, Houston Texans, and most recently with the Indianapolis Colts. In 2009, Boyd was a member of the Montreal Alouettes’ (CFL) practice squad.
A two-sport athlete at the University of Kentucky, Boyd played both football and baseball. He finished his Wildcats career with 2,484 passing yards, 845 rushing yards, and 26 total touchdowns. Prior to attending Kentucky he was drafted as a pitcher by the Minnesota Twins the 12th round of the 2004 Major League Baseball Draft.
