UK football offers scholarship to 7th grader

LEXINGTON, KY. (WKYT) - UK football coach Mark Stoops is planning for the future of the Wildcats' football program. ESPN.com is reporting UK offered a scholarship to seventh grader Jairus Brents this (Thursday) morning.

Brents is only 13-years-old. The youngster from Indiana participated in a football camp at the university last weekend weekend and opened the coaches' eyes.

The 5-foot-8, 152-pound Brents competed against the receivers from the Class of 2014 and intercepted three passes and broke up several other passing plays. According to the story on ESPN.com,

Brents is the second seventh-grade football player to be offered a scholarship offer. USC offered David Sills in 2010 when he was in seventh grade. Sills accepted the scholarship and is planning to sign with the Trojans in 2015.

Colleges cannot make handwritten offers to prospective recruits until their senior year of high school, although there is no NCAA rule against verbal offers. Colleges cannot publicly discuss specific recruits until they sign a letter of intent, which Brents will not be able to do until 2018.
