LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky football team finished the final practice of the week Thursday, making sure everything was right mentally for the season opener against Western Kentucky at Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday.

“It was good, mentally,” said Phillips. “This is a day for mental preparation. You install everything on Tuesday, try to work the plan on Wednesday, and mentally you want to make sure that everybody knows the plan on Thursday.”

The first-year head coach said that going into this week of practice he was worried about his team’s mental preparation coming off such an emotional victory last week. However, after s solid week of practice where Phillips was pleased with how his team was mentally in practice every day he said he was “way past that.”

“(I was concerned that) Going into the week that we would not be into the game mentally after playing a big game like we did last week,” Phillips said. “I am way past that because of what we got this week (in practice). But you always have to be concerned about turnovers and those things in a game like this which will get you beat.”

UK has an all-time record of 90-23-6 in home openers, winning 14 consecutive games against non-conference opponents at Commonwealth Stadium, dating back to 2005.
