    Genuine Risk, one of only three fillies to win the Kentucky Derby, died Monday at Newstead Farm. The 1980 Derby winner died peacefully about 7:30 a.m. at the age of 31 after eating a hearty breakfast and being turned out in her paddock, said Cindy Perry, an office administrator at the farm. Perry said the filly had not been ill.

    Pro Bowl receiver Chad Johnson hurt his left shoulder Sunday night during the Detroit Lions' 27-10 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, who now have their top two receivers and their starting tailback limited by injuries.

    Bengals receiver Chad Johnson landed awkwardly while trying to make a catch in the first quarter against Detroit on Sunday night, then left the game to have his left shoulder examined. Cornerback Brian Kelly hit Johnson as he tried to pull in a pass from Carson Palmer on the Bengals' first series, jarring the ball loose. Kelly came up with the interception and an off-balance Johnson landed on his left side.
  • Jockey Club committee makes four new recommendations
    The Thoroughbred Safety Committee, which in June recommended the elimination of steroids in race training and racing, a ban on toe grabs and a series of whip-related reforms, has issued four additional recommendations pertaining to drug testing and laboratory standards, uniform penalties for drug rules and prohibited practices violations, TCO2 testing, and a national system to report injuries during both racing and training.

  • Bowling wins Ky. Open
    LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University senior golfer Trey Bowling won the 2008 Kentucky Open by two shots. EKU golfers have now won the event two straight years, Phil Hendrickson claimed the 2007 title. Bowling fired a 1-under par 71 during Thursday’s final round of the 89th Open and finished with a three-round total of 206, 10-under par. Bowling, who entered the day tied for the lead with Troy Hawkins, held off a charge from Andrew Stephens (208).
  • Tyson Gay Moves On To 100 Meter Quarterfinals
    This looked more like a workout than a true test. Either way, Tyson Gay easily made it through the first round of the Olympic 100-meter dash Friday.
