RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University head football coach Dean Hood announced today that 27 student-athletes will join the Colonel program beginning this spring and next fall. Nine of those student-athletes come from the Commonwealth of Kentucky while nine other student-athletes joined the EKU program this past January.
The class includes 10 offensive linemen, four defensive backs, four defensive linemen, three running backs, two quarterbacks, two linebackers, one wide receiver and one tight end. The 2012 signing class comes from nine different states ranging from Texas to New York.
“I think the biggest thing was that we were able to replace what we lost in the 2011 senior class with our mid-year additions,” Hood said. “All of our high school signings were just icing on the cake and will help us in the future. We had to hit the offensive line hard because we lost four players this past year and will lose four more following this fall.”
Colonel fans are invited to Gillum’s Sports Lounge in the Richmond Mall for lunch on Thursday, Feb. 2 to listen to Hood’s thoughts on the 2012 signing class. The luncheon is scheduled to start at noon and will also include video highlights of all of the signees.
The Colonels are slated to return 17 of 22 starters (10 – offense, seven defense) in 2012 including eight first team all-conference players. EKU kicks off the 2012 schedule at Purdue on Sept. 1. Fans can reserve 2012 season tickets by contacting the EKU athletics ticket office at 859-622-2122.
