Kentucky Takes Down Delaware State For First Win

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Jodie Meeks scored 22 points to lead
Kentucky to its first win of the season, a 71-42 victory over
Delaware State on Saturday.
Meeks made five-of-eight 3-point attempts. He has been the
scoring leader, or shared that honor, for Kentucky (1-2) in each of
the Wildcats' three games.
The Wildcats kept the defensive pressure on the Hornets (1-5),
forcing 22 turnovers, 13 in the first half. Delaware State made
only one-of-nine 3-point attempts.
Trevor Welcher and Arturo Dubois led the Hornets with 10 points
each. Frisco Sandidge had eight rebounds for Delaware State.
Delaware State had eight offensive rebounds.
Kentucky was better at taking care of the basketball than it had
been, turning it over 12 times. The Wildcats had 25 or more in each
of its first two games.
Kentucky made it clear from the start that they had no
intentions of starting their season 0-3 and taking another loss on
their home floor. The Wildcats rushed to a 10-2 lead about three
minutes into the game, with Jodie Meeks making his first two
3-pointers, a dunk by Patrick Patterson and a lay-up by Michael
Porter after a steal. The Hornets cut the lead to 10-5 after a
3-pointer by Welcher but it was as close as they would get.
Kentucky's largest lead in the game was 29 twice, including the
final margin.
Kentucky led 37-23 at halftime.
Freshman Darius Miller scored a career-high 13 for Kentucky, and
Patrick Patterson had nine. Four Wildcats shared the rebounding
lead with four each.
Kentucky scored first in the second half on a 3-pointer by
Michael Porter. Delaware State looked like it might make a game of
it after that, when Dubois made three field goals in a row to make
the score 40-29. Then Kentucky made its run.
The Wildcats scored 14 in a row in an assault from all over the
court - fast break lay-ups, dunks, free throws and 3-pointers. With
9:21 to play, the Wildcats had made the score 54-29.
The loss was the fifth in a row for the Hornets since winning
their first of the season.
Next for the teams, Kentucky hosts Longwood on Monday, and
Delaware State travels to play West Virginia on Tuesday.
