Tony Delk interviews for opening at Western Kentucky

Western Kentucky University men's basketball has a fairly high-profile candidate for the open assistant coaching job in its program, that's according to James Brandenburg from our sister station-WBKO.

Former University of Kentucky star Tony Delk - who spent ten seasons in the NBA with eight different teams - is a candidate to fill the vacancy, sources close to the WKU program told WBKO on Tuesday.

The source said there's mutual interest between Delk and the school regarding the opening. Delk was on the WKU campus on Tuesday afternoon.

Delk spent last season as a member of John Calipari's first staff at UK, an apparent effort to break into the college coaching ranks.

Delk's NBA career was solid; he averaged 9.1 points and 1.9 assists in 541 career games - including a career-high 53 points for the Phoenix Suns against the Sacramento Kings in January 2001. But Delk was very decorated in his college career.

His 1,890 career points are still fifth all-time at Kentucky, he's the Wildcats' all-time leader in three-point field goals (283) and second in three-point attempts (712) and is second in career steals at the school (201). He led the Wildcats to the NCAA championship as a senior in 1996 - when he was named SEC Player of the Year, earned second-team All-America honors, was named Most Valuable Player at the Midwest Regional of the NCAA Tournament and earned Most Outstanding Player honors at the Final Four.

A Brownsville, Tenn. native, Delk was named a McDonald's All-American as a high school senior in 1992.

If hired, Delk would fill the opening left by David Boyden's departure from the program. The former WKU captain left the program last week after two years as an assistant coach.
