A sold out crowd of nearly 800 UK fans attended the annual Jefferson Co. alumni luncheon in Louisville on Wednesday. UK coach John Calipari was the headline speaker.
UK president Eli Capilouto noted he would be attending his first Big Blue Madness on Friday. "I'm not going to medicate myself," he said with a laugh.
Calipari noted his 2011 team will be "unconventional."
"It’s an unconventional team," he said. "We’ve got six starters. I don’t know what I’m going to do. Can we start six? And we may have seven starters, so what do you do? They’re all the same position, they all look the same, they all play the same."
The third-year coach said he urged his team to achieve greatness, on and off the court.
"We're chasing greatness. We're not chasing mediocrity. In everything. That's the Kentucky effect."
Calipari said he thinks this year's team can contend for a national title.
"All I can tell you is my vision would be is at the end of the year we’ll be one of those teams, that’s up at bat, slugging it out for the whole thing," he said. "That’s what we’ll be. I’m convinced of that because the more I’m around these young people, the more I’m convinced they really want this."
