Some sad news for UK Basketball Coach John Calipari.
His mother, Donna, died Sunday night. She had been battling cancer for the last several months.
On Monday morning, Coach Cal reached out to the Big Blue Nation, thanking fans for all their support.
On Twitter, he said, "As most of you know, my mom, Donna, has been battling cancer for several months. On Sunday, she lost her brave fight. On behalf of my dad, my two sisters, Ellen & all of our family, we want to thank the Big Blue Nation for all their prayers, cards, letters & support shared w/my mom during these days. Your warmth uplifted her and all of us. We hope you will all respect our privacy during this period & know that we are grateful for being part of the Big Blue family. God Bless & thank you - Coach Cal & Family."
UK Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart released a statement Monday morning, saying, "Our prayers go out to John and his family after losing his mother during her battle with cancer. We ask that the Big Blue Nation keep the Calipari family in their thoughts and prayers and respect their privacy during this time of grief."
UK Athletics spokesman DeWayne Peevy told the media Monday afternoon all indications point towards Calipari being on the bench when his team plays Boston University in Rupp Arena Tuesday night.
