Kentucky women earn 2 seed in NCAA tournament

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky's record start and Southeastern Conference regular season title earned the Wildcats a two seed in the Kingston region of the NCAA women's tournament on Monday night.

It matched the highest seed the Wildcats have ever received in the NCAA tournament.

Kentucky (25-6) will play 15-seed McNeese State (26-7) on Saturday afternoon in Ames, Iowa. The winner will face either Green Bay or the host, Iowa State, in the second round on Monday.

The Wildcats gathered in coach Matthew Mitchell's basement around a large, circular leather couch and were boisterous after learning their fate. The joy might be short lived - the No. 1 seed in their region is Connecticut.

Kentucky is bolstered by SEC player of the year A'dia Mathies, who averages 15.7 points per game.
