Brandon Knight knew he was entering the NBA under less-than-ideal circumstances.

A lockout went into effect eight days after he was drafted in the first round by the Pistons.

So …

He hasn't met his new coach, Lawrence Frank, and can't contact him because of the lockout rules.

And, he can't get advice from Pistons strength-and-conditioning coach Arnie Kander on how to prepare for the rigors of an 82-game grind.

That said, Knight isn't stressing over a deal being reached to salvage a full season. The owners and players met last week and are scheduled to meet again today.

"There's no reason to be anxious," said Knight, selected seventh overall out of Kentucky. "It's something I can't control. It could last awhile so who knows?

"I didn't have any expectations when I was drafted. I had no clue what would happen."

That's not to say Knight isn't concerned with the current state of affairs.

But the uncertainty is a reason why he hasn't set any lofty expectations for his rookie season — yet.

"I don't have any goals right now," he said. "Once I know there will be a season, then I'll start setting goals, but not right now."

As for the possibility of playing overseas if the lockout continues into the season, it's not high on Knight's list.

"No, I'm probably going to stay here," he said. "I don't have any plans of going overseas."

While he hasn't seen much 5-on-5 action since being drafted — the last time he played was in a game featuring former Kentucky players against the Dominican Republic National Team a few weeks ago — Knight has been keeping busy.

He's been in Los Angeles working out with All-Stars Kevin Love (Minnesota) and Russell Westbrook (Oklahoma City).

And, he's been busy in the weight room.

"I feel like I'll be strong enough," said Knight, who weighs 185 pounds but is slightly built. "I'm happy with my development so far this summer."

The lockout, however, presented somewhat of a silver lining for Knight.

Despite spending one year in college, Knight had 90 credits at the time he was drafted.

A 4.28 student in high school, Knight's had a chance to continue his education.

"I'm taking online classes," he said. "As far as taking a full load, I'm going to wait and see what happens (with the lockout)."

And when he gets word camp will start, Knight gladly will make the trek back to Detroit, which made an impression on him during a visit in June. He threw out the first pitch at a Tigers game June 24.

"Just going there, there was a lot of love from the fans," Knight said. "The biggest thing (that impressed me) was how they received me. It wasn't even a basketball game."
