Mike Cassity returns to UK this season as defensive backs coach and he'll be depending on some young players to come through in the secondary. Among them is sophomore safety Ashely Lowery.
Lowery played in all twelve games as a freshman last season and garnered more playing time as the season went on. There are some concerns in the Cat's defensive backfield. With Marcus Caffey ruled ineligible, senior Martavious Neloms has been moved from safety to cornerback. In his second season Lowery will be heavily counted on and he's confident, "I feel like we know the stuff and there's not really any pressure. just know what you're doing and getting your job done. We come out here and we go through it every day, we sit in meetings. So it's your job to study for it and learn everything you gotta do."
Cassity, who had a previous stint as a UK assistant in the late 70's and early 80's coached Lowery in the spring and has been impressed. "At the end of spring he was actually the starter. Ya know we don't talk about it a lot but hes done a great job and ya know hes picked up where he left off in the spring."
Lowery recovered a fumble last season against Florida and late in the year earned his first start in his home state of georgia where he made a season high five tackles.
