LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - UK offensive coordinator Neal Brown is bringing the air raid back to Kentucky and he'll need to have the right quarterback. Mark Stoops will make the final decision. "I'll make that call. Of course I trust Neal and as we go through camp, we'll work togther on that. But ultimately it'll have to be my decision with great input from Neal."
Max Smith has the most game experience. His throws are being limited at the start of camp to protect his shoulder. Patrick Towles gained experience as a freshman when Smith was injured. Hes dropped 15-16 pounds since last spring. Jalen Whitlow put up the best performance in the Blue White game, completing 17 passes, two for touchdowns. The players and coaches say they want it to be a competition, not a controversy. "Our lockers, ya know they're right next to each other, we've been with each other all summer." said Smith. "We all get along well."
To have the best view at practice, Stoops is standing directly behind the quarterbacks. A place he hasn't coached from before. "I'm actually standing so I can watch the defense, but it also gives me a good feel for what the quarterbacks are doing, and really what the offense is doing. It's a different perspective for me."
Any decision would appear to be a ways off, the first scrimmage won't come until sometime next week. Whatever the decision, Stoops says everybody will have to trust it. "As we go through camp and we build what we're doing here, there's a trust factor there. Our players need to trust that we're going to put everyone of them in a position to be successful. And they have to trust and be confident that whoever is behind center can lead this team and help us win."
