Report: Phillips may have violated NCAA "bump rule"

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Former University of Florida wide receivers coach Joker Phillips may have violated the NCAA's "bump rule" after a picture of the coach and a high school recruit was sent to the NCAA.

Yahoo Sports is reporting the story. It says that someone associated with the Miami Hurricanes turned over the photo to the NCAA.

Phillips resigned suddenly on Wednesday, citing personal reasons.

According to Yahoo, the picture shows the former UK head coach sitting with a recruit in a restaurant during a mandated dead period for recruiting. Should the NCAA determine Phillips improperly recruited during a mandated dead period, it could be considered a major NCAA violation.

The "bump rule" involves a scenario in which a coach unexpectedly comes across a recruit and has impermissible dialogue. Such a situation is considered a secondary violation. However, the violation could be more serious if the encounter was deemed premeditated or arranged.
