LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Kentucky assistant coach Orlando Antigua will be named the next head coach of the Dominican Republic national basketball team, a Dominican basketball website is reporting.
According to Domincanos en Basket, a website devoted to the sport in the Caribbean, Antigua's announcement will be made in the coming days.
The Dominican native has been an assistant coach for John Calipari for the past four seasons at Kentucky and was an assistant for one season at Memphis with Calipari. Antigua also served on Calipari's Dominican Republic national staff the past two years.
Antigua played for his country's national team in 1994-95 and in 1997-98.
The Dominicans will next play in the pre-World Championships in Caracas, Aug. 30-Sept. 11. The top four teams from that tournament will head to the World Cup
