LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - It was a day that didn't come soon enough for Mark Stoops, Media Day and the first workout for the Kentucky Wildcats.
Stoops has made no secret of the fact that he's eager to get started. As camp opens he knows he'll have to be patient and it won't be easy. "It's hard but ya know, we've preached that to the players and it's true. We're gonna build this program brick by brick. We have to lay the foundation, we have to do our work each and every day, there's no short cuts."
The two biggest factors in fall camp - continue the momentum that Stoops has built since he arrived and select a starting quarterback. Sophomores Patrick Towles, Max Smith and Jalen Whitlow are contending for the job. Smith, who went out with an injury last season, has the most game experience. "Coach Brown (offensive coordinator Neal Brown), hasn't told us anything. It's just go out, compete every day and just make sure that as a team we're getting better."
A lot of the faces are familiar but there are many new ones. All hoping they can contribute as the Cats look to rebuild in the upcoming season. Stoops had his players report Sunday, held a meeting Sunday night, then couldn't wait to hit the practice field. "I didn't sleep very good last night, I was ready to go."
Kentucky oepns the season August 31 in Nashville against Western Kentucky.
