LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Mark Stoops was not happy with his Wildcats after their third practice of fall camp.

“Just an average practice,” Stoops said.

The Cats put the pads on for the first time, but coaches were dissatisfied with the energy level during Wednesday’s morning workout.

“First day of pads and we didn’t play physical,” defensive coordinator D.J. Eliot said. “It’s disappointing.

“I thought we’d have to slow them down, not speed them up,” he added.

“You know I’m not giving them any place to hide,” Stoops said. “Not good enough. Not tough enough. Not enough energy. “

“Too early in camp. Guys feeling sorry for themselves, getting up early,” Stoops added.

Junior defensive tackle Melvin Lewis said some of the Wildcats may have been nervous about putting the pads on for the first time.

“We just came out flat,” Lewis said. “From the time we stepped on the field, to the time we came off.”

Senior defensive tackle Mike Douglas said there are no excuses for having a bad practice.

“For us to go somewhere we haven’t been in a long time, we have to do things that we’ve never done,” Douglas said. “Being a team player, being accountable and doing the things the coaches are telling us to do.”

The annual fan day is Saturday, beginning at 9 am. Coaches and players will sign autographs and take pictures inside the Nutter Fieldhouse. At 10:00 am, the Cats will walk across to Commonwealth Stadium for an open practice.
