LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - For a fourth straight season the UK Softball team finished up league play with a winning record.
"You know we've been able to beat some quality opponents," head coach Rachel Lawson said. "We were able to throw a no-hitter in our first SEC game. We've been able to win a ton of series early, and that really put us in a good position.
Senior Lauren Cumbess leads the Wildcats in several offensive categories but she isn't alone.
"We have a lot of balance from the lead off position all the way through number nine, and we're able to bring people off the bench that are very good and every day starters as well. So we have a really deep team."
The other key to success is pitching, sophomore Kelsey Nunley carried UK to the Super Regionals as a freshman last season and has already won more than 20 games this year.. She is the kind of ace pitcher every elite team needs.
"Nunley is that girl. She is that good. She's steady. She knows what she's doing and she's tough. She just does everything the right way."
Now it's on to the SEC tournament where the Cats will face Mississippi St. in the opening round on Wednesday at 4 pm. Coach Lawson expects the field of competition at the SEC tournament to be better than the field at the College World Series in Oklahoma.
"Our conference is incredibly strong. We're right up there with football, and that's what SEC fans understand and SEC baseball. I think just the quality of our athletes just they're big and strong and they're fast. So the quality of the SEC tournament there's nothing like it."
