LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – There’s no new news on the Kentucky quarterback front. Coach Mark Stoops said on Friday the starter’s job is still wide open.
“Somebody needs to take the reins and be the clear-cut winner of this job,” Stoops said. “We’re giving them plenty of opportunity. Somebody needs to take it and run with it.”
Stoops’ comments came during UK’s annual Media Day at Commonwealth Stadium.
Stoops said Patrick Towles, Reese Phillips and Drew Barker have taken equal reps in practice.
“Maxwell (Smith) has not been 100 percent.”
Stoops said whichever guy wins the job will be improved from last season.
“The guys have really done a nice job. They’re better rounded and I expect them to go out and play well.”
The second-year coach said some of his newcomers will play immediately.
“I think there’s about 12 to 13 freshmen that will play,” he said. “I think we have to play the receivers. Those guys have looked good. Running backs as well.”
Stoops said his team will play more physically and look the part.
“I like the look of our team. I love the way the new bodies in our program look and we need to continue to develop those guys.”
