Cabela’s Ladies’ Day

Date(s): 10/5/2013

9:00 A.M.-1:00 P.M.

Cabela’s in Louisville
Cabela’s in Louisville will celebrate the growing number of women enjoying the outdoors with Ladies Day Out, October 5, 2013 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This semi-annual event encourages ladies to try out the latest outdoor apparel, camping gear, personal firearms and other supplies. The first 100 women to register at the store will receive a free gift and all women who attend and participate in the event will be invited to enjoy the employee discount on all purchases.

With more than 5 million women participating in shooting sports, an increase of 46.5 percent since 2001, this growing demographic will enjoy classes including:
• Women’s Archery Range
• NRA Surviving A Violent Event Courses
• Casting Range

According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, new target shooters–those who have taken up the sport in the last five years–are younger, female and urban when compared to established target shooters, or those participating for more than five years.

Classes will be taught by local experts and are free of charge.

Product specialists and industry experts will be on hand to answer questions and provide recommendations while offering suggestions to help ladies make the most of their next outdoor adventure.

“Ladies Day Out is a celebration of women in the outdoors," said Bob Johnson, general manager. “Cabela’s is proud to offer women not only the gear, but also the expert knowledge to pursue their outdoor passions.”
For a complete schedule of Ladies Day Out events, call (502) 365-9020. Cabela’s Louisville is located at 5100 Norton Healthcare Blvd. For additional information or to shop online, visit www.Cabelas.com.

Woodland Owners Short Course

8:30 - 4:30 pm

Whitley County Extension Office
The WOSC is run on a regional basis with a full Saturday program in the East, Central, and West regions of the state.
The regional programs have been developed by local planning committees with local needs in mind and cover a wide variety of subjects. Some topics covered include: how to receive a fair price when you sell timber, making your woodlands wildlife friendly, wild boar issues, tree id, tree planting, emerald ash borer and much more (see brochure). The WOSC is one of the best woodland educational opportunities available in the state for woodland owners; however, anyone with an interest in forestry or wildlife will benefit from attending.

The WOSC will be held in 3 locations in August (August 4 -- Whitley Co.; August 11 -- Marshall Co.; August 25 -- Franklin and Shelby Co. This program is a great opportunity for families to learn how to enhance their woodlands and get the most from their ownership experience. Most woodland owners are not aware of the wide variety of organizations and programs available to help them care for their woodlands. The primary mission of the WOSC is to assist Kentucky’s woodland owners in the care and management of their woodland resource.

More than ten Kentucky forestry, wildlife, and natural resource organizations work in partnership to plan, and conduct the WOSC. http://www.ca.uky.edu/forestryextension/WOSC.php

'Guilty' Movie Premier

7:30 pm

Paramount Arts Center 1300 Winchester Avenue Ashland, KY 41101

Guilty, the second movie for local production company, Westwood Productions, will premier at the Paramount Arts Center in Ashland, Kentucky on Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. Admission will be FREE and concessions will be available for purchase.

This is the second effort for filmmaker David Cordial who started Westwood Productions in association with Fairview Baptist Church where he serves as Associate Pastor – Children’s Minister. Cordial, an Ashland native, writes faith-based movies that present God’s message of salvation in unique ways. He says, “In today’s world we learn a lot more by what we see and less from what we hear. By putting the Gospel message in the form of movies we become a medium that is easily acceptable by almost everyone. Everyone likes movies, everyone wants to be entertained.”

Guilty stars Marlon Robinson who plays Paul, a prisoner who maintains his innocence while his wife, played by Robinson’s wife Lori, struggles to make him see his guilt. Cordial also stars in the film as Tiny, an acquaintance of Paul’s who tries to help him through the struggles he faces while in prison.

The film was shot during the spring and summer of 2011 and used actors from the church. Children as well as adults participated in the filming. Not only did church members work as actors but some also lent their homes for use during filming. In addition, the church was used for many scenes. The West Virginia State Penitentiary located in Moundsville, West Virginia which went out of operation in 1995 allowed the crew to film some scenes there as well. The film’s editor, Isaac Stambaugh, is also an Ashland native but now lives in Cincinnati and works as a producer for Rebel Pilgrim Productions.

Cordial hopes to see many people attend the premier at the Paramount. More information about the movie can be found at the website: www.guilitythemovie.com.

Free kids inflatable obstacle course, basketball camp coming to Magoffin

1:00 - 7:00 pm

South Magoffin Elementary School, 171 Half Mountain Road, Salyersville
SALYERSVILLE – Youth of Magoffin County will have double the fun at free Operation UNITE events to be held Thursday, June 21.

From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. the Kentucky Army National Guard’s Civil Operations Unit from London will set up their popular inflatable obstacle course in the gym at South Magoffin Elementary School, 171 Half Mountain Road, in Salyersville.

Then, from 4 p.m. to about 7 p.m., a free regional Shoot Hoops Not Drugs basketball camp will be conducted by former University of Kentucky basketball standout Jeff Sheppard.

Youth can participate in either or both events.

This is the 7th year for Shoot Hoops Not Drugs camps, which provide basketball skills instruction in conjunction with anti-drug and self-esteem messages. In addition, parents and guardians have an opportunity to attend an education program on how to talk to their children about drugs.

All youth participants receive a free event T-shirt, regulation basketball, food and water, and be entered into a drawing for two portable basketball goals given away at the conclusion of each camp (must be present to win).

Participants are asked not to wear open-toe shoes or sandals and to arrive about 15 minute early for registration.

Presented by Phoenix Products, Shoot Hoops Not Drugs camps are fun, interactive, and provide a safe, drug-free activity where children have an opportunity to interact with positive role models while learning fundamental basketball skills.

As a senior at the University of Kentucky, Sheppard was named the NCAA’s Final Four Most Valuable Player in the Wildcats’ 1997-98 National Championship season. He would later go on to play one season with the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks and 3 years in Italy.

Major sponsors include Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Kentucky, Codell Construction, Lightyear Network Solutions, Senture, State Senator Robert Stivers, Walmart of Eastern Kentucky and WestCare. Silver sponsors are Dollar Mania (Manchester), First National Bank of Manchester, and J. Shelby Inc. (Clay Circuit Court Clerk James Phillips). Teddy G. Woods, CPA, of Manchester is a Bronze sponsor.

Since 2006, UNITE has conducted 38 regional camps with 5,055 youth participants representing 53 Kentucky counties, 11 other states and one other country.

Rally for Religious Freedom

12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Lexington, KY Joins 2nd Coast-to-Coast Rally
Against the Obamacare HHS Mandate, Friday, June 8

Lexington, KY - On Friday, June 8, as the United States Supreme Court prepares to issue its ruling on the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), concerned citizens of Lexington will take to the streets to voice public opposition to the Obama administration’s Health and Human Services Mandate. The HHS Mandate forces all employers—including Catholic schools and hospitals—to provide free contraceptives, surgical sterilizations and abortion-inducing drugs through their health plans, regardless of religious or moral convictions.

The Lexington Stand Up for Religious Freedom Rally will begin at 12 noon at Phoenix Park, on the corner of S. Limestone and W. Main , joining over 100 other cities and towns from Maine to Hawaii that are participating in this national event. A complete list of rally sites and other details are available at StandUpRally.com.

The June 8 Stand Up Rally builds on the tremendous momentum created by the first Stand Up Rally held on March 23, with over 63,000 citizens of all faiths attending local rallies in 145 cities. With the Supreme Court’s Obamacare ruling coming and the November elections in sight, the June 8 Stand Up Rally is expected to draw even larger crowds.

The Lexington Stand Up for Religious Freedom Rally has been organized by Paula Muncy – info@lexingtonrallyforreligiousfreedom.org.

• What: Stand Up for Religious Freedom Rally
• When: Friday, June 8, 12 noon to 1 p.m.
• Where: Phoenix Park on the corner of S. Limestone and W. Main
• Who: Hundreds of local citizens opposed to Obama’s HHS Mandate

The date for the Stand Up Rally was chosen to highlight the HHS Mandate’s unconstitutional infringement of religious freedom, coming just weeks before the highly anticipated Supreme Court ruling on Obamacare, expected at the end of June.

“If Obamacare is ruled unconstitutional, we must ensure that religious freedom will be protected in subsequent health care legislation” explained Muncy “But if Obamacare is not struck down, we’ll be sending the federal government a clear message that the faith-based institutions and private businesses affected by the HHS Mandate here in Lexington will not violate their consciences by complying with it.”

Muncy emphasized that the Stand Up Rally has nothing to do with access to contraception. “There is no ‘war on contraception’ in our country. Contraception is already widely, cheaply available. What’s really under attack today is religious freedom.”

The June 8 Rally coincides with the 223rd anniversary of the day James Madison introduced the Bill of Rights to the 1st Congress, including what would become the First Amendment. “We’re standing up for the First Amendment and demanding that all our health care laws respect religious freedom,” Muncy explained.

Humane Society of the United States President to Make Louisville Appearance

7:00 pm

Barnes & Noble 801 South Hurstbourne Pkwy Louisville, KY 40222
Wayne Pacelle’s bestselling book The Bond: Our Kinship with Animals, Our Call Defend Them (William Morrow) has been called revolutionary, uplifting, and inspiring. Pacelle explains what underlies our age-old connection with other creatures and challenges readers to help build a more humane society. As Pacelle takes readers on a journey from the nation’s great open spaces to its crowded factory farms to the ice floes of Canada where seals are slaughtered, he illuminates the stark dichotomy we face in an age when animals are more beloved yet more abused than during any period in history. There is a better way, Pacelle argues, making the case for a humane economy based on ecotourism, fur-free fashion, improved farming systems, and other innovative models. It’s a message of hope and an inspiring call to action for all. The book debuted in a paperback version on April 3, 2012.

Pacelle will discuss the themes in the book and issues of local, national and international impact. During a quarter–century of leadership in the humane movement, most of it at The HSUS, Pacelle has become America’s foremost voice for those who cannot speak in their own defense, and has helped to bring animal protection from the margins to the mainstream.
