O.A.R. with very special guests Allen Stone and Brynn Elliott

7:00 PM

Churchill Downs Plaza Louisville, KY
Churchill Downs, America's most famous racetrack, is excited to announce a unique live concert experience this Fall. See O.A.R. live on stage with guests Allen Stone & Brynn Elliott under the Twin Spires on Wednesday, Sept. 9, as we celebrate the start of September racing at the track.

“Music has had a presence at the home of the Kentucky Derby since our track’s earliest days, and we’re excited to partner with Live Nation to renew that tradition with this exciting appearance by O.A.R.,” said Ryan Jordan, General Manager of Churchill Downs. “Our Plaza stage offers an intimate and comfortable setting that’s perfect for both a special evening for O.A.R. and its fans and a wonderful return of live music to Churchill Downs.”

Classic American author Thomas Wolfe famously stated “you can’t go home again,” but don’t tell that to the members of O.A.R. On their eighth studio album, THE ROCKVILLE LP, the shape-shifting rock band found that returning home triggered a journey of creative renewal and inspiration.

“This isn’t about us going back to our musical roots per se,” says lead singer Marc Roberge, who founded O.A.R. in 1996 with his Rockville, Md. high school classmates, drummer Chris Culos, guitarist Richard On, and bassist Benj Gershman (saxophonist Jerry DePizzo joined while the group was at Ohio State University). “It’s about us getting inspired by the place we came from. We’d drive the same roads, visit the old haunts, spend time with our people. Rockville was the catalyst then, and it’s the catalyst now.”

O.A.R. is renowned for its intense, vibrant live show —including selling out Madison Square Garden twice —and the communal feeling it shares with its fans. With each studio album, the band has endeavored to achieve that sense of immediacy, and Roberge says THE ROCKVILLE LP“comes the closest” to that goal.

“Every live band I know of always wants nothing more than to carry their live performance onto the album. It’s an elusive thing to capture, so I’ll never say we nailed it. But I can guarantee we put that same live show energy and passion into each minute of THE ROCKVILLE LP and we can only hope the audience feels that.”

tadoo Lounge presents Bear Medicine and Joseph Allred (“The Moon Has Been All My Life” official vinyl release party)

6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Smiley Pete Publishing, 434 Old Vine St. Lexington, Kentucky, 40507
This month’s tadoo Lounge Session will double as the official vinyl release celebration for the LP “The Moon Has Been All My Life” from local chamber-influenced dream-rock band Bear Medicine. The event will feature a headlining performance from them and an opening set from Knoxville-based 12-string guitarist Joseph Allred.

Hosted as always at Smiley Pete Publishing, the Happy Hour-style event is free and all ages, with food from Wild Thyme Chef Allison Davis, cocktails (specially crafted by Brandon Judd using Jack Rudy Cocktail Co. mixers) and Sweetwater craft beer available for purchase.

Lexington’s own Bear Medicine is a mystical concept band, tempering a traditional rock quartet structure with celestial voices, cello, flute and piano. Self-described “soothers,” the group envisions their sound as a healing balm to the wounds of life.

Red Barn Radio Welcomes My Brother's Keeper

Date(s): 7/2/2014

8pm

Lexington, KY 40507
Moved forward from last week's power outage:
RED BARN RADIO WELCOMES MY BROTHER'S KEEPER 07/02 8 PM.

Growing up together, and surrounded by music, My
Brother's Keeper has played music together for years,
but not under this official band name. MBK was raised on
the genres of Folk, Bluegrass, and Gospel, so the
growing popularity of Folk music, lead by bands such as
Mumford and Sons and the Lumineers, only opened a door
for MBK to take the music they love to eager audiences.
However, MBK does not limit themselves musically,
influenced by bands of many different genres and
backgrounds. MBK strives to seek inspiration anywhere
and use it in an original manner. MBK consists of
brothers Benjamin, Titus, and Joshua Luckhaupt on
guitar, mandolin, and fiddle respectively. Wyatt
"Sawmill" Murray completes this ensemble on the upright
bass. With original music that draws inspiration from
Bluegrass, Rock and everything in between, MBK strives
to be unique as well as listenable. MBK features tight,
four part harmonies, rock driven lead vocals, blazing
solos, and complex and interlaced musical interludes. In
an effort to be unique and open minded, and bring a
fresh blend of Bluegrass to new audiences, My Brother's
Keeper has presented itself as one of the fastest rising
Bluegrass bands on the scene of Cincinnati music.

A Love Supreme - The Spiritual Music of John Coltrane

7:00 P.M.

Church of the Good Shepherd, 533 E. Main St., Lexington, KY 40508
Episcopal Church to Host Jazz Concert

Lexington, KY, September 24, 2012 – The Church of the Good Shepherd has announced that it will host a jazz concert, “A Love Supreme,” featuring the spiritual music of John Coltrane in what is being billed as an evening of powerful and beautiful compositions, performed by the Dick Sisto Quartet. The concert will be held at the church, 533 East Main Street (at Bell Court), on Sunday, October 28 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $15.00 in advance, $20.00 at the door, and can be purchased by calling the church office at 859-252-1744 or visiting the church website, www.goodshepherdlex.org. Proceeds will benefit the Good Shepherd Choir 2013 Tour of Italy and France where they are to perform at St. Paul’s Within the Walls in Rome, St. James Church, Florence and The American Cathedral and La Madeleine in Paris.

Mr. Sisto, an internationally recognized vibraphonist and resident of Louisville, notes that the spiritual music of Mr. Coltrane, an American jazz saxophonist and composer (1926-1967), were a result of his ever deepening return to his spiritual roots, which originated in gospel and of a Christian orientation, after struggling for years with heroin addiction as well as alcoholism. Coltrane was gradually introduced to Eastern mysticism and spirituality, including Islam and Hinduism. During this period, he met and married his second wife, Alice Coltrane and together produced a number of spirituality oriented recordings. The prominent tenor jazz saxophonist, Ravi Coltrane, is the son of John and Alice.

In addition to Mr. Sisto on vibraphone, other members of the Dick Sisto Quartet are Steve Allee on piano, Jim Anderson on Bass with Steve Houghton on Drums. The repertoire for the evening includes Coltrane’s ‘A Love Supreme’, ‘Dear Lord’, Wise One’, ‘Spiritual’ and ‘Equinox. Sisto has served as music director for the Seelbach Hotel, given clinics and masters classes throughout the U.S., and is the host of two long-running Public Radio shows for the Louisville NPR affiliate station. His wife, Penny, is an internationally acclaimed fabric artist, and son, Jeremy, is the accomplished actor of stage and screen who has appeared on HBO’s “Six Feet Under” and NBC’s “Law and Order.

The Rev. Brian Cole, Rector, indicates that Good Shepherd is a place whose roots are deep in Christian life and the traditional music of the church’s Anglican heritage, however the church values the importance of welcoming new and creative ways to worship in a fresh way. His hope is that this evening of jazz will bless the space with a deepening spirit of soulfulness and creativity through the music of Coltrane and the artistry of the Sisto Quartet, adding to the creative energy that already permeates life at Good Shepherd and the community of Lexington.

Legendary banjo player JD Crowe is known for his popular tune “Old Home Place”, which chronicles the life transition of someone leaving their home in the country for a new life in the city. This is one of JD’s last tour dates before he retires. The Boxcars, another IBMA Award winning band, have just released their new CD, All In. Coaltown Dixie is an all girl Bluegrass band, originating from the beautiful hills of Appalachia, from Pike and Floyd counties. They enjoy playing traditional Bluegrass music as well as putting a Bluegrass spin on non-traditional tunes.
