Country ham dinner pairs AZUR Restaurant & Patio chef with author Steve Coomes Nov. 12

7:00 PM

Azur Restaurant and Patio in Lexington
Author Steve Coomes will bring stories of the timeless Southern tradition of country ham to a special dining event at AZUR Restaurant & Patio Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. AZUR chef Jeremy Ashby, inspired by recipes in Coomes’ recently released book Country Ham: A Southern Tradition of Hogs, Salt & Smoke, has created a four-course menu highlighting the Kentucky delicacy. An avid cook of cured meats, Ashby will prepare some of world’s best aged pork while Coomes gives diners the rub on the regional history of country ham and its ascent from blue-collar staple to fine dining feature. The cost is $45.95 per person, plus tax and gratuity. Guests can also purchase a personalized copy Coomes’ book for an additional $15. For more information or to make reservations, call (859) 296-1007.

The country ham dinner menu includes:

First Course
Sautéed chicken livers with country ham, caramelized onions, Marsala wine and sage sauce and crackling cornbread crostini
Inspired by Volare chef Joshua Moore’s vitello saltimbocca with a Kentucky taste (Louisville, Ky.)

Second Course
Nashville hot-style fried quail stuffed with country ham and cheddar with sweet and sour greens, tomato-pepper jelly and hot fries
Inspired by The Hamery’s cheddar and ham cheese ball (Murfreesboro, Tenn.)

Third Course
Butter-braised cabbage with smoked country ham hocks and kimchee over potato-Gruyere puree and caraway-dusted chicharron
Inspired by Harper’s Country Ham’s ham hocks and cabbage dinner (Clinton, Ky.)

Fourth Course
Sweet and savory country ham-infused ice cream with sweet potato biscuits, sorghum and roasted apple caramel
Inspired by chef John Varanese’s sweet potato biscuits (Louisville, Ky.) and Feast BBQ chef Ryan Roger’s country ham ice cream (New Albany, Ind.)

7:30 PM

Second Presbyterian Church, 460 E. Main St. (enter on Ransom Ave.), Lexington, KY
Music is often associated with war and peace. From the Crusades to conflicts between nations, music has been used to incite battles as well as to mourn the resultant damage and deaths. What often follows is music based on dona nobis pacem (grant us peace). We begin our 24th season with powerful, beautiful, and sometimes chilling music of war and peace.

Japanese Rakugo "Sitdown Comedy" Storyteller in English!

Date(s): 4/18/2014

7:30 P.M.-9:00 P.M.

Lyric Theater, Lexington KY
Japan’s answer to stand-up comedy, Rakugo is a 400-year-old tradition of comic storytelling. As popular today as it ever was, Rakugo (literally “falling word”) has, until recently, had little exposure in North America, but that is all about to change. Canadian Katsura Sunshine, the only foreign storyteller among almost 700 practicing professionals today, aims to shine the spotlight on this ancient art form with his English translations of Rakugo’s classic stories.

Katsura Sunshine comes to Kentucky for the first time to perform this traditional (and very funny!) Japanese storytelling art!

An Evening with C.S. Lewis

Date(s): 4/8/2014

7:00 P.M.

Lyric Theater, 300 E. 3rd St. Lexington, KY 40508
Acclaimed British actor David Payne is bringing his wonderfully witty portrayal of Lewis to the Lyric Theater in Lexington on April 8 at 7pm. Tickets are $20, $30 and $40 for VIP seats which will also include a Meet and Greet with Payne.

A brief outline of the the show:

The year is 1963 and C.S. Lewis, the famous British author, is hosting a group of American writers at his home, just outside of Oxford.
They have come to hear a man whose writings have already established him as one of the most influential authors of his day and they are about to be treated to a display of powerful oratory and great humor as he recounts the significant events and the people that shaped his life.

"An Evening with CS Lewis" has proved to be an enthralling theatrical experience for the many thousands who have attended its performances and is a fascinating and riveting insight into the life of a man whose collected works made him one of the literary giants of 20th century.

Red Barn Radio Welcomes The Kevin Prater Band

8:00 P.M.

ArtsPlace, 161 N Mill St., Lexington, KY 40507
Red Barn Radio Welcomes the Kevin Prater Band 3/19 at 8 pm
The band's music comes from a wide range of influences and musical heroes. They base their sound on strong vocal harmonies, built around high trios, and their style is reminiscent of the classic Seldom Scene and 1970's Country Gentlemen performances. They are also steeped in the tradition of Gospel music, and pride themselves on the a capella hymns and great gospel songs that people have come to enjoy. The band also includes classic country in their repertoire and loves bringing old familiar favorites to life. Add a little vintage rock and roll and you never know what else you might experience at a KPB show! The band members are great friends, and want to make great music. They look forward to traveling and meeting wonderful people across this great land, entertaining them with music and fun.
