UPIKE School of Dance presents: "The Nutcracker"

5th - 7:30 PM and 7th 2:30 PM

Booth Auditorium (5th floor of Record Memorial Building), UPIKE campus, 147 Sycamore St., Pikeville KY 41501
Celebrate the yuletide season with the magic of "The Nutcracker ballet". See this holiday classic come to life as Herr Drosselmeir turns the nutcracker doll into a handsome prince who will whisk Clara away to a land of snowflakes and sweets ruled by the Sugar Plum Fairy.

The ballet is presented by the University of Pikeville School of Dance and includes more than 120 performers ages seven to adult, including community volunteers.

The University’s first Nutcracker performance debuted in 1978. A highlight of the production was a six-foot Christmas tree that grew to 14-feet and magically collapsed upward before disappearing.

Peggy Davis, artistic director and founder of the dance program, made an appeal for someone to design a new tree during an interview on PikeTV.

“Out of the blue we heard from someone who had been involved in making the original tree,” said Davis. “Kay Chaney of Harold called and offered to make a new one. This is very exciting and we really appreciate her efforts.”

Performances will be held Friday, Dec. 5, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 7, at 2:30 p.m. Both performances will be held in University of Pikeville’s Booth Auditorium, Record Memorial building, level five. Admission is $5. Tickets will be available at the door.

The University of Pikeville School of Dance is under the direction of Conda Little and Davis. For more information, call (606) 218-5751.

2014 Appalachian Christmas Artisan Fair

10:00 AM - 4:00 PM

UPIKE Gymnasium (downtown Pikeville near the intersection of Bank and Elm Streets)
Sustainable Pike County announces its 2nd Annual Appalachian Christmas Craft Fair for Saturday, November 22, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the University of Pikeville Gymnasium in downtown Pikeville. The event will feature only locally craftspeople and artists. The fair is designed to provide a venue for local artisans to sell their products. Donations of $1.00 at the door will gladly be taken to support Sustainable Pike County's continuing mission of creating opportunities for local businesses that showcase the enormous talent of local vendors.

This year’s event has moved to a larger location to accommodate more vendors and attendees. The inaugural fair held in 2013 was held at the Pike County Extension Office and featured over 30 vendors, with over 500 individuals attending the event.

“We are excited for this year’s event, that promises to be bigger and better than last year’s event. As soon as the event ended last year, we had vendors and attendees asking about next year’s event. Our vendors were pleased with the event and the response from customers, so with demand comes growth, and we hope that this year’s event will again help local people and the local economy. This year’s event proves the importance of supporting the local economy. We have dozens of vendors that we be featured and that means that all those dollars stay in our local economy. The crafts are hand-made and are not manufactured items from outside the area. This is truly a unique that we hope strengthens are local economy,” said Fair Coordinator, Kelly Scott.

The variety of crafts and other products to be featured at the event will highlight the creativity of local artisans and will also provide a sampling of baked goods and local holiday entertainment from local bands and artists, and will include pictures with Santa Claus.

For vendors wanting to participate, please contact Kelly Scott at (606) 432-8966 or visit the Eventbrite Registration page at http://goo.gl/pDiHxy or visit the Sustainable Pike County Facebook page for the link to register.

Old Crow Medicine Show w. Marty Stuart

Date(s): 4/26/2014

7:30 P.M.

Pikeville KY
On September 17th, 2013 Old Crow Medicine Show received the great honor of being inducted as the newest members of the historic Grand Ole Opry. Other highlights from the year included winning the Grammy Award for "Best Long Form Music Video" for the film Big Easy Express, and having their classic single, "Wagon Wheel", receive the RIAA's Platinum certification for selling over 1,000,000 copies.

The band got its start busking on street corners in New York state and up through Canada, winning audiences along the way with their boundless energy and spirit. They eventually found themselves in Boone, North Carolina where they caught the attention of folk icon Doc Watson while playing in front of a pharmacy. He immediately invited the band to play at his MerleFest, helping to launch their career. Shortly thereafter the band relocated to Nashville for a residency at the Grand Ole Opry, where they entertained the crowd between shows.

It's been nearly fifteen years since these humble beginnings, and the band has gone on to tour the world, sell over 800,000 albums, become frequent guests on A Prairie Home Companion, and play renowned festivals like Bonnaroo, Coachella, and the Newport Folk Festival.

Old Crow Medicine Show now have four studio albums to their name, three of which were released by Nettwerk Records - O.C.M.S and Big Iron World produced by David Rawlings, and Tennessee Pusher produced by Don Was. On their newest album, Carry Me Back, Old Crow continue to craft classic American roots music while pushing themselves in new directions. Carry Me Back, released by ATO Records and produced by Ted Hutt, represents a new stretch of road in the timeless journey of a rambling string band.

Hillbilly Days

10:00 A.M.-11:00 P.M.

Pikeville, KY
Come enjoy the festivities and craziness of Hillbilly Days and bring the family! There is something for everyone with hundreds of food and craft booths, a huge carnival, and music throughout the town. Y'all will be assured of having three days of outrageous fun, food, and frolic.

Hillbilly Days offers loads of fun for all participants, but there is true meaning behind the event. For 36 years, Shriners have faithfully traveled all over the United States and Canada to help crippled children. So, when you come upon Shriners all decked out in Hillbilly garb or driving one of those modified Hillbilly limousines, remember the children whose lives are being enhanced.

Hillbilly days improves each year as Shriners, the Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, Pike County Government, City of Pikeville and local volunteers transform downtown Pikeville into one of the most unique festivals in the world!
