Once Upon a Time... In the 1950s

Event Dates and Times

Berea, KY
Put on your poodle skirts and leather jackets and come on down to Old Town Berea this weekend! “Once Upon a Time… in the 1950s” will be in Old Town Berea on Saturday, May 30th starting at 6 p.m. We hope to make “Once upon a time…” an annual event based on a different time period each year. This year the event includes a motorcycle run that will start in Richmond and end at Old Town. Bikes will park down the street in front of the Village Trough. There will be live music at the Village Trough and vendors of all kinds on Broadway. The streets will be closed at 5 p.m. and vendors will be set up and ready to go by 6 p.m. There will be a Sock Hop Dance in front of the Tourism office starting at 8 p.m. Events are free except for the bike run which is $10 per bike.

We had dance classes each Tuesday night at the Folk Center to get people ready for the sock hop, the extension office has hosted a “make your own poodle skirt” workshop and we are showing “Back to the Future” the movie at the Cabin on Broadway the night before on May 29th which is also free! So we have put a lot of effort into this event and are hoping for a great turn out.

The event is organized by the Madison County Public Library, but includes several organizations in Madison County!

Please feel free to contact me with any questions 859-623-6704 or tracy@madisonlibrary.org

We hope to see you there!

A Taste of the 18th Century

Event Dates and Times

9:00 A.M.-5:00 P.M.
Richmond, KY
Ever think about what food was like in 18th century Kentucky? You need wonder no longer.

Brook & Barbara Elliott, proprietors of Historic Foodways, will once again be passing out samples of colonial style foods during the Winter Trade Days, at Fort Boonesborough SP, November 30-December 1.

“Adapting foods from that period can be quite an adventure,” notes Barbara Elliott. “They liked bold flavors in those days, much stronger tasting than we do. The trick becomes adapting the foods so they are pleasing to the modern palate while staying true to the original flavor profile.”

The Elliotts will have samples of four dishes of the era: Pease Soup, Sweet Potato Buns, Red Cabbage with Sausages, and Chicken Mumble. The recipes for these can be found in their two books on colonial cooking: A Colonial Virginia Book of Cookery and A Colonial Virginia Book of Cookery Second Table, which they’ll have available for sale.

“Each of our recipes has been adapted from original source material,” Elliott says, “some of which date back to the 1600s.” In each case they’ve been proven on live fires and in the home kitchen, she adds. Why both? “So if people want to experience these foods they can prepare them at home, without having to kick off a fire in the backyard.”

Long time living historians who’ve specialized in the foodways of the southern Colonial and early Federalist periods, the Elliotts will be on hand to discuss the historical aspects of food, gardening, and the many uses of herbs in early Kentucky.

In addition to their cookbooks, the Elliotts will have other historically-based products for sale, including seeds of period vegetables, organically grown herbs and herbal products, and, their latest product, a line of herbal vinegars.

Winter Trade Days will take place at the Fort, November 30-December 1. The gates open at 9:00 am each morning, and continue until 5:00 pm.

For additional information about this event, contact: Fort Boonesborough SP, 4375 Boonesboro Road, Richmond, KY 40475, 859-527-3131

To find out more about Historic Foodways, contact the Elliotts at Historic Foodways, PO Box 519, Richmond, KY 40476, HistoricFoodways@hotmail.com.

Whisper of the Wild Opening Reception

Event Dates and Times

Gallery on Main, 128 W. Main Street, Richmond, KY
Featured artist, Crimson Duvall, uses her personal experiences, nature, motherhood and fairytales to create visual stories by painting on canvas and sculpting ceramic, coil-built creatures. She then places them in environments of mixed media and found objects that enrich the pieces with previous histories. With these two bodies of work, Inklings (paintings and drawings) and Wild Flowers (sculptures), a tale of an esoteric world full of Crimson’s creatures begins to unfold.

Former Deb store in the Richmond Mall Richmond, KY
Kentucky River Foothills Development Council, Inc. (KRFDC) will hold its first annual Classy Closet Consignment Sale September 21-22 at the Richmond Mall in the former Deb store. To launch this special event, a Preview Party ($25) will be held on Thursday, September 20 from 6-9 pm at the same location. All proceeds will benefit the Berea and Richmond Senior Citizens Centers and Liberty Place Recovery Center for Women.

The Preview Party will feature Spa fun, refreshments including drinks and cocktail party foods, door prizes, a live auction of clothing and accessories from well-known women, and the chance to be the first to see and buy the upscale clothing and accessories that will be a part of this event. Tickets to the Preview Party are $25 and go on sale on Wednesday, August 15th at 9 a.m. There are only 200 tickets available.

Sponsored by Bechtel Parson Blue Grass, the consignment sale is free and open to the public. The Public Sale will be held Friday, September 21 from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Saturday, September 22 (1/2 price day) from 8 a.m. – noon.

Consignment registrations will be accepted through Wednesday, September 12. To register as a consignor, please visit KRFDC’s website at www.foothillscap.org or contact Karen Bailey at karen@foothillscap.org or call 624-2046, extension 217.

"Consignors will keep 70 percent of the sale price and receive a check a few weeks after the sale,” said Karen Bailey, KRFDC Public Information and Projects Director. “It’s a great way to make money and clean out your closets and storage space.” Anyone is welcome to become a consignor and to shop at the sale.

Items that individuals may buy or sell include: upscale women’s clothing (denim, skirts, dresses, pants, shorts, suits, blouses, knits and tees, and sweaters), light and heavy coats, dress hats, gently used shoes, jewelry, scarves, handbags, wallets, and belts.

If an item is not listed, contact Foothills at 624-2046, extension 217 to make sure it is acceptable to sell. “This sale is not a garage sale,” said Bailey. “All items will be inspected upon check-in to be sure that they are clean, without stains and in working order. All items will be organized into a store-format so that it is easy to shop and find the sizes and types of products you are looking for.”

Items that are not accepted include clothing styles more than 10 years old and items with stains, missing buttons, rips, holes or other damages.

"We will offer clean, quality items at reasonable prices," said Bailey. “If you’re looking to find some great deals on gently-used clothing or accessories, this will be the place to shop.”

Cash, local checks, and credit cards (Visa and MasterCard only) will be accepted on the days of the sale.

Ms. Bailey also stressed that a sale of this size could not happen without the support and hard work of many volunteers. If anyone is interested in volunteering, or has any other general questions, they can call Karen Bailey at 624-2046, extension 217 or visit www.foothillscap.org.

Cell Phones for Soldiers Roadside Party

Event Dates and Times

(Richmond, Kentucky) Give an American soldier a chance to talk to loved ones just by bringing your used cell phones to the Liberty Tax Service office at 620 Big Hill Avenue, Suite #5. Join Liberty Tax Service for the Cell Phones for Soldiers Roadside Party. This collection event takes place November 6th from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Liberty Tax will provide refreshments, food, free crowns for children and also offer free tax advice. The goal is to fill up the “Liberty mobile’s” trunk with cell phones. All Liberty Tax offices are collection locations for used cell phones to benefit Cell Phones for Soldiers. After the roadside party the Libertymobile will move over to the EKU campus where cell phones may continue to be collected until the beginning of the EKU vs. Jacksonville State football game!

Cell Phones for Soldiers makes contact with home a reality for soldiers stationed in Iraq and overseas who face excessive phone calling charges. This dilemma prompted two concerned teenagers to start CPFS with $14 of their snack money. Teenagers Brittany and Robbie Bergquist of Norwell, Massachusetts and their family enlisted the help of sponsors and phone companies to recycle used cell phones to provide calling cards. As a National Premier Partner, Liberty Tax Service has contributed over 12 million minutes of calling time for our military since 2004. The Website (www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com) has details for those who would like to make cash donations.

“If you’re one of 153 million cell phone users who upgrade and don’t know what to do with that old phone, help a soldier and take it to Liberty Tax Service . There is a huge potential to make a difference with over half of the people holding on to old phones and not recycling,” said Jonell Hinton, of Liberty Tax Service . “This is an easy way to make a difference for those serving America overseas.”
