Once Upon a Time... In the 1950s

May 30, 2015 6:00 PM

Berea, KY
Put on your poodle skirts and leather jackets and come on down to Old Town Berea this weekend! “Once Upon a Time… in the 1950s” will be in Old Town Berea on Saturday, May 30th starting at 6 p.m. We hope to make “Once upon a time…” an annual event based on a different time period each year. This year the event includes a motorcycle run that will start in Richmond and end at Old Town. Bikes will park down the street in front of the Village Trough. There will be live music at the Village Trough and vendors of all kinds on Broadway. The streets will be closed at 5 p.m. and vendors will be set up and ready to go by 6 p.m. There will be a Sock Hop Dance in front of the Tourism office starting at 8 p.m. Events are free except for the bike run which is $10 per bike.

We had dance classes each Tuesday night at the Folk Center to get people ready for the sock hop, the extension office has hosted a “make your own poodle skirt” workshop and we are showing “Back to the Future” the movie at the Cabin on Broadway the night before on May 29th which is also free! So we have put a lot of effort into this event and are hoping for a great turn out.

The event is organized by the Madison County Public Library, but includes several organizations in Madison County!

Please feel free to contact me with any questions 859-623-6704 or

We hope to see you there!

He has two grown daughters, Shauna and Kari Cornett.
Stealing a quote from Jerry Maquire, author of "Wicked," Cornett says, “Where I'm from, we believe in all sorts of things that aren't true... we call it history.”

Bell County, Kentucky: A Brief History (Brief Histories) --
Site of the Gateway to the West, the Cumberland Gap, the history of Kentucky begins right here in Bell County. Early pioneers like Thomas Walker and Daniel Boone endured the untamed wilderness and opened the door to the Bluegrass for civilizations to follow. Those who subsequently made their homes here- who eked a living out of the rocky soil and survived civil war, world war, labor war and the booms and busts of timber and coal- have preserved this pioneering spirit. Lifelong resident Tim Cornett presents the history of his homeland from its first known inhabitants through the twentieth century, drawing on old letters, memoirs and personal interviews from the men and women who explored the land, exploited the land and shaped it into the Bell County we know today.

Bell County (KY) (Images of America) --
A photo history of Bell County from its early days as the Cumberland For settlement to the close of the 2oth century. Through years of research local author Tim Cornett has presented an interest walk down memory lane.

William Tribell is a Pushcart Prize nominee with a penchant for travel. Born in Kentucky, He has lived all over the country and the world. Returning to the States last year after five years in Eastern Europe, William currently lives in the Cumberland Gap.

He is a member of The Southern Collective Experience. His work appears in journals and magazines around the world, including Mensa's Calliope, Pine Mountain Sand Gravel, and Cowboys & Indians magazine. Many of his poems recorded spoken word and with instrumentation by Radio Hall of Fame inductee Gary Burbank, actor John Blyth Barrymore, Red State Update's Travis Harmon and many others can be found online.

William has recently worked part-time as a reporter for the Daily News in Middlesboro KY, he is a member of the Tri State Paranormal Investigators cast of the TV show “Paranormal Journeys” in Middlesboro on MCTV 22 and he hosts a weekly radio show called Spectrum that airs every Wednesday at midnight est. on Appalshop’s WMMT 88.7 FM in Whitesburg Ky.

Repressions is a collection of poems by authors William S Tribell, Tina Twito and Jeffery L Carey Jr. Their Repressionist movement culminated during the economic downturn exploring social and economic repressions, as well as, repressed memories and emotions. Many of their poems seek to understand and bring these repressions to the surface, thus re-pressing them or bringing them to light once again. The collection also captures the spirit of what came to be known as the “lost generation”.

Released on April 25 2015, Repressions can be purchased online at,, and the Black Madonna press website.

Beer Cheese Festival

Jun 13, 2015 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Downtown Winchester KY
Ask almost anyone what the best part of the Beer Cheese Festival is, and they'll tell you, "Sampling beer cheese!" and they're right. We start at 10am and go all the way to 5pm. Purchase a $5 wristband from a beer cheese wristband booth located at either entrance of Beer Cheese Blvd. on Main St. Once your wristband is purchased you will be given (1) ticket to vote for your favorite beer cheese. Wristbands must be worn at all times while at Beer Cheese Blvd. to receive beer cheese samples. You can sample beer cheese from any of our vendors. Sample them all. Find your favorite. Cast your vote. You can even purchase beer cheese right from the vendors. When you need a break, there are plenty of other things to do at the festival--listen to live music, drink from the beer garden, visit arts & crafts or Kentucky Proud booths...and then you can head right back into the beer cheese section, and try some more, because at the end of the day it's all about the beer cheese!

Halloween Hoe-Down

Oct 20, 2012 2:00 P.M.-6:00 P.M.

Irvine McDowell Park
The Halloween Hoe-Down is a family friendly event designed for children to have a safe place to Trick or Treat in Richmond. Back in the 1940's, a Halloween festival was held and attracted numerous community members to downtown Richmond. In 2006, the Richmond Parks & Recreation Department restructured their Boo Bash to be incorporated downtown with other outdoor festivities. In 2011 it was moved to the Irvine McDowell Park to create a festival atmosphere. The Halloween Hoe-Down continues to be a great success and a wonderful event for the whole community.

The festival will begin at 2:00pm and continue until 6:00pm. Free Activities include Kids Games, Train Rides, a Petting Zoo, Walk Around Characters, and Face painting. A Special “Thank You” goes out to the Eastern Kentucky University Recreation & Parks Administration REC 460 Class for helping to organize the games, decorations, and contests this year. They will be using this as a service learning project.

Dog Costume Contest

At 2:00pm Registration for all contests will begin. The Dog Costume Contest will have two categories- Most Original and Best 2 Part Costume. The Best Two Part Costume will be judged on the dog and the owner’s costume and how they fit together. The first place prize for each Dog Costume Contest is $75 Cash – Sponsored by Luxury Pets Services. Dog Owners can register at the tables located to the left of the Gazebo.

Registration forms will be available here soon!

The Richard McHargue Cloggers will be performing on stage before and after the Dog Costume Contest. Craft vendors, food vendors, fall market booths, and pet booths will also be on hand. Thank you to Moberly Karate For Kids for helping sponsor this event. Booths will be set up to visit throughout the park. For more information, please contact Erin Moore at 859-623-8753.

Sep 22, 2012 10am - 5pm

Lexington Court House Square, N. Limestone and Main St.
Come join us in the 6th Annual celebration of the Autumn Equinox.

As an entry fee, you are asked to share in the harvest by bringing a non-perishable food item to benefit the Catholic Action Center.

All ages are welcome to attend this free event, which will have vendors / merchants, workshops (such as “Ask A Witch”, for those who may have questions about Paganism), diviners, food and rituals. We are proud to announce entertainment by Kellianna this year. You can also join the fun during the day, by bringing your drums and joining in drumming circles.

Lexington-Bluegrass Pagan Pride is a local chapter affiliated with the Pagan Pride Project. The Pagan Pride Project is a global organization whose mission is the advancement of knowledge and accurate information to reduce discrimination and misconceptions and to foster acceptance among the general public. It is through this event and others like it, that we hope to create greater understanding and positive communications with our neighbors, co-workers and friends, both Pagan and non-Pagan, here in the Bluegrass.
