A Love Supreme - The Spiritual Music of John Coltrane
Oct 28, 2012 7:00 P.M.
Church of the Good Shepherd, 533 E. Main St., Lexington, KY 40508
Episcopal Church to Host Jazz Concert
Lexington, KY, September 24, 2012 – The Church of the Good Shepherd has announced that it will host a jazz concert, “A Love Supreme,” featuring the spiritual music of John Coltrane in what is being billed as an evening of powerful and beautiful compositions, performed by the Dick Sisto Quartet. The concert will be held at the church, 533 East Main Street (at Bell Court), on Sunday, October 28 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $15.00 in advance, $20.00 at the door, and can be purchased by calling the church office at 859-252-1744 or visiting the church website, www.goodshepherdlex.org. Proceeds will benefit the Good Shepherd Choir 2013 Tour of Italy and France where they are to perform at St. Paul’s Within the Walls in Rome, St. James Church, Florence and The American Cathedral and La Madeleine in Paris.
Mr. Sisto, an internationally recognized vibraphonist and resident of Louisville, notes that the spiritual music of Mr. Coltrane, an American jazz saxophonist and composer (1926-1967), were a result of his ever deepening return to his spiritual roots, which originated in gospel and of a Christian orientation, after struggling for years with heroin addiction as well as alcoholism. Coltrane was gradually introduced to Eastern mysticism and spirituality, including Islam and Hinduism. During this period, he met and married his second wife, Alice Coltrane and together produced a number of spirituality oriented recordings. The prominent tenor jazz saxophonist, Ravi Coltrane, is the son of John and Alice.
In addition to Mr. Sisto on vibraphone, other members of the Dick Sisto Quartet are Steve Allee on piano, Jim Anderson on Bass with Steve Houghton on Drums. The repertoire for the evening includes Coltrane’s ‘A Love Supreme’, ‘Dear Lord’, Wise One’, ‘Spiritual’ and ‘Equinox. Sisto has served as music director for the Seelbach Hotel, given clinics and masters classes throughout the U.S., and is the host of two long-running Public Radio shows for the Louisville NPR affiliate station. His wife, Penny, is an internationally acclaimed fabric artist, and son, Jeremy, is the accomplished actor of stage and screen who has appeared on HBO’s “Six Feet Under” and NBC’s “Law and Order.
The Rev. Brian Cole, Rector, indicates that Good Shepherd is a place whose roots are deep in Christian life and the traditional music of the church’s Anglican heritage, however the church values the importance of welcoming new and creative ways to worship in a fresh way. His hope is that this evening of jazz will bless the space with a deepening spirit of soulfulness and creativity through the music of Coltrane and the artistry of the Sisto Quartet, adding to the creative energy that already permeates life at Good Shepherd and the community of Lexington.
