Waze is a free social mobile app that enables drivers to build and use live maps, real-time traffic updates and turn-by-turn navigation for an optimal commute. By being 100 percent powered by users, the more you drive the better it gets.
Waze is used exclusively by WKYT and Officer Don to show changing traffic conditions during WKYT’s morning and early evening newscasts.
By joining other drivers in our area who share real-time traffic and road info, everyone can save time and gas money on their daily commute. Get alerted before you approach police, accidents, road hazards or traffic jams, all shared by other drivers in real time. Download Waze to your smart phone from the App Store or Google Play Android Market by searching for “Waze.”
Then, join the WKYT LiveDrivers group and be a part of our traffic team. You may hear Officer Don use your user name and information on air.
So, how does it work?
After typing in their destination address, users just drive with the app open on their phone to passively contribute traffic and other road data, but they can also take a more active role by sharing road reports on accidents, police traps, or any other hazards along the way, helping to give other users in the area a 'heads-up' about what's to come.
In addition to the local communities of drivers using the app, Waze is also home to an active community of online map editors who ensure that the data in their areas is as up-to-date as possible.
