LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Due to construction, there's a major traffic impact on I-75 in Lexington for the second day in a row.
Traffic is backed up for miles, due to work on the bridge at exit 113 at Paris Pike. At times on Wednesday, traffic was backed up to exit 108, at Man O'War.
Some drivers are getting off at exits trying to avoid the closure, but as we saw yesterday, that only created more traffic problems on roads in town. Transportation officials say road work has been going on everyday this week. Yesterday and today though, especially, have created some trouble spots for drivers. Officials say it's necessary for repairs, and drivers should expect to see more of it throughout the upcoming months.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Department of Highways issued a press release Wednesday saying temporary closures are scheduled for the interstate at the Newtown Pike bridge in Lexington. The closure is necessary for bridge deck repair work and the resealing of bridge expansion joints.
Work schedules and locations include Thursday, May 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. At this time, the two left (fast) lanes will be closed at mile point 115.2. At least one lane will remain open at all times.
Appropriate signage and traffic control devices will be in place to direct motorists through the work zone.
Officials say the closures are necessary for repairs though and drivers should expect to see more of it throughout the upcoming months.
"Anytime you close two lanes, especially within a city or urban environment, you can expect backups," says Natasha Lacy, PIO Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. "As I said, we have to do this to maintain the bridges and make sure they're in good working order. In addition to that, there are construction projects that are active too during this time period."
All work is subject to change depending on weather, emergencies and other factors beyond the control of the Department of Highways.
