(Lee Todd Statement)
Lee Todd, President of the University of Kentucky, confirms knowledge of the NCAA investigation at the University of Memphis:
“The University of Kentucky was made aware of the NCAA inquiry at the University of Memphis during the interview process and we are confident that Coach Calipari was not involved in any way. He was very open with us about what he was aware of at that particular time, and since this is an issue between the University of Memphis and the NCAA and not a UK issue, we will not be commenting further on anything related to this situation."
(Mitch Barnhart Statement)
Mitch Barnhart, University of Kentucky Athletics Director, confirms knowledge of the NCAA investigation at the University of Memphis:
"We talked with several people and thoroughly exercised due diligence during the process of hiring Coach Calipari. We asked the right questions. Coach Calipari was forthcoming and honest about the NCAA inquiry at the University of Memphis during the interview process. John Calipari is the basketball coach at the University of Kentucky and we are extremely excited about our future at Kentucky. We support him fully as he participates in the NCAA hearing and we have encouraged him not to comment and I also will not comment any further."
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - University of Kentucky president Lee Todd
says he knew about an NCAA investigation into the Memphis
basketball program led at the time by new Kentucky coach John
Calipari.
Todd confirms in a statement Thursday that the Lexington school
had prior knowledge of the investigation. Todd has been attending
Southeastern Conference meetings in Destin, Fla. He said he remains
confident Calipari is not a subject of the probe.
The allegations stem from the 2007-2008 season at Memphis,
according to reports in The Commerical Appeal in Memphis. They
include "knowing fraudulence or misconduct" on an SAT exam by a
player on that season's team, which finished runner-up in the NCAA
tournament.
Kentucky spokesman DeWayne Peevy said Thursday that Calipari had
left the SEC meetings and had headed to Memphis.
