A winter blast that brought light snow yesterday through the morning hours today will also bring plunging temperatures.
"The best bet for continued snow showers for the rest of the day will be for Eastern and Southeast Kentucky. This is where the upslope component of the mountains comes into play. The Bluegrass and the rest of the WKYT viewing audience may see a stray flurry here and there but the snow is over", said WKYT meteorologist Todd Borek.
The National Weather Service continues a "Winter Weather Advisory" until this evening for Knox, Bell, Floyd, Knott, Perry, Clay, Leslie, Martin, Johnson, Magoffin, Breathitt, Greenup, Carter, Boyd, Lawrence, Fleming, Montgomery, Bath, Rowan, Estill, Powell, Menifee, Rockcastle, Jackson, Pulaski, Laurel, Wayne, McCreary, Whitley, Elliott, Morgan, Wolfe, Lee, and Owsley Counties. Snowfall totals of 2-3 inches are possible in these areas.
"Another concern for the rest of this weekend will be the cold and blustery conditions," Borek said.
Highs will struggle into the mid 20s this afternoon with gusty northwest to north wind up to 35 miles per hour at times. This combination allows wind chill factors to hover in the single digits for the bulk of the day.
The rest of the weekend and into early next week will be dry but cold with highs slowly working back into the mid and upper 30s.
"In conditions like this, remember to allow your pets to stay indoors, especially with overnight lows around 10 degrees and wind chills near 0 tomorrow morning," Borek said.
