The fire happened around 12:45 this afternoon in the 300 block of Transylvania Park, near downtown Lexington.

A family is without most of their belongings after a fire destroyed them. They say they're just happy no one was hurt.

"It's a nightmare come true, with it being my dads building. I never wanted anything like his to happen,"says Belinda Latta, a resident there.

Latta was at the store with her two children and when they returned, they witnessed their home on fire,"I saw the flames, some grabbed the ladder and the hose until they got here."

Lexington fire crews were able to stop the fire from spreading to other parts of the building.

"Pretty heavy black smoke, they initially had to attack and they actually knocked down the fire pretty quick. Basically what we have is an intense fire. It looks like it was contained to the bedroom, and that's where it started," says Major Brian Wainscott with the Lexington Fire Department.

The other residents that were at the home were all able to escape without any injury. All family pets were accounted for.

"The bottom line is everyone got out safe, I don't care," adds Latta.

While the Latta family may have lost most of their household things to this fire, Latta recognizes that it's those things that can be replaced, "It just makes me thankful for my family."

Lexington firefighters are still working to determine what caused the apartment fire.

No word on if the other residents of the building were able to return home tonight.
