It's the last resort for shelter staff, but when space runs out and all resources are maxed out more than half of these dogs will be euthanized.

An average of 1,000 animals are brought into the Jessamine County Animal Shelter every year. Of that number, fifty-nine percent of them will be euthanized. The shelter is hoping an expansion project will help to bring that percentage down.
"We don't really have a life expectancy, as long as they're happy, healthy, they're okay, and we have the space then we keep them as long as we can," says shelter manager, Andrea Hall.

It's a harsh reality but unless there are more adoptions, most of these furry faces won't even have a chance.
"That's why we're at PetSmart every weekend and were getting our new facility over there. There's going to be more kennels over there and hopefully more people will come out and see us, and see the dogs and want to adopt," adds Hall.
The new shelter will have at least ten more cages.
Staff at the Jessamine County Animal Shelter hope to have the new facility open by this March.
