Whitley County boy injured by falling tree during Saturday's storms

A child is recovering from critical injuries after being hurt in a storm over the weekend.

Firefighters in Whitley County tell WKYT the child was in his back yard when a neighbor's tree fell on him.

Relatives say Jordan Griffith, 12, of Williamsburg, is responding to treatment, but he's still in critical condition after being taken by ambulance from Williamsburg to the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington.

Fire officials tell us high winds on Saturday brought down a tree on the neighboring property, destroying a fence, a playhouse, and hitting Jordan in the head and chest. His grandmother saw it happen and called 911.

"He was unconscious when we got there and hadn't regained consciousness when EMS left with him," says Asst. Chief Larry Todd, with Williamsburg Fire & Rescue.

Friends say Jordan fractured several vertebrae and had to have surgery on his skull. On top of that, they say he's also fighting a case of pneumonia. Word of the accident spread through social media.

"He's a fine young man, loves hugs, loves to love people," Todd tells us.

Firefighters say they had to transport Jordan by ambulance because the weather prevented the medical helicopter from flying. They say not only did they have the heavy wind and rain, but also a lot of lightning.

Jordan's grandmother says the tree that fell was dead, and a crew had been paid to cut it down, but they hadn't done the job yet.
