Here are the criteria for severe thunderstorms:

• Wind gusts 58mph or higher
• Dime size hail or larger

Tornado warnings are issued by the National Weather Service if a tornado is spotted on the ground, or if a rotating funnel cloud is spotted. Tornado warnings may also be issued if radar shows strong rotation inside a severe thunderstorm.
