100 years of coal celebration

Updated: Fri 7:06 PM, Aug 19, 2011

Harlan County will hold a celebration next Thursday marking 100 years of coal and railroads.

On August 25th 1911, the first load of coal was sent by rail car in Harlan County.

Since coal is an important part of Harlan County's economy, the Harlan County Historical Network decided to hold a celebration for 100 years of coal and the railroads.

“It is a celebration of the railroad and how it has empowered the coal industry to be what it is. So that is why we are celebrating both of them together,” Larry Lafollette, President Harlan County Historical Network.

The event kicks off Thursday at three with a coal miner's appreciation dinner, then Governor Steve Beshear will be speaking on the courthouse steps at five.
