State Officials Investigate Church Fire

MONTICELLO, Ky. (AP) - State arson and ATF investigators are
looking into a church fire in southern Kentucky.

Wayne County Sheriff Charles Boston says an early morning fire
of undetermined origin destroyed the Jesus Christ Chapel on the
property of the church's pastors, Cornelius and Maggie Duncan. It
was about two miles south of Monticello.

Boston said no problems have been reported to him concerning the
church, but he pointed out that he's only been in office since
January. A year ago, the Duncans said threats against them scared
away their congregation. Maggie Duncan told WKYT-TV in Lexington
the fire was a "hate crime." A call to the Louisville office of
the FBI in an effort to determine if the fire will become the
object of a federal investigation was not returned.

Cornelius Duncan told the television station he has been
remodeling the church and putting in new electrical wiring. He said
it was hoped he would be able to re-open the church for worship in
a few weeks. The Duncans say the church was not insured, but they
will rebuild.
