The fall forest fire season begins Monday, but some were reported today and officials fear it could be one of the worst seasons ever due to the drought.
Normally there are very few fires in August and September. This year there were more than three hundred fires burning nearly nine thousand acres. During the same period last year, there were only four fires.
Many counties have already issued burning bans which means no burning at any time, but even if your county doesn't have a ban, it's illegal to burn within 150 feet of the woods from six am to six pm and you must stay near the fire.
The fall forest fire season runs through December 15th.
Arson is the leading cause of forest fires in Kentucky. To report a suspected arsonist, call the Arson Hotline at 1-800-27-ARSON.
