A family is still mourning the loss of Lakyn Pennington, a young girl from Prestonsburg who died in a car crash just weeks ago. Recently, they found out someone has been asking local businesses to help pay for Lakyn's funeral.
The woman authorities are looking for is Misty Ousley, but the Pennington family says she is going by Alex Goble. They say she was introducing herself to workers at local businesses using these names and some others as well, saying she was a part of the pennington family. Lakyn's family found out about the scam at Lakyn's funeral.
"A distant relative came up to us at the funeral. her sister in law works at wright lumber company which was 1000 feet from the funeral home and she had came in there wanting money. They didn't give her anything because they knew," said Penny Pennington, Lakyn's Aunt.
Family members say all of this has been tough to deal with.
"It's just been a headache because here we're trying to deal with what happened to her and she's out here collecting money to buy drugs and what all, it's stupid. Why would somebody do something like that?," said Pennington.
The Pennington family lived down the street from Ousley.
"We've know her her whole life and then for her to do something this despicable is unforgivable."
But they did not ask for her help.
"We haven't talked to her. She knew we didn't need help with that funeral. She did not have permission to do this. She hasn't called and offered to you know give us the money or anything."
"She hit Garrett, Houeysville, the whole Martin area, Prestonsburg. You know, pizza places, clothing stores, barber shops, restaurants."
Some business owners did give Ousley money. They thought it was going towards a good cause. The Sheriff's Department is still investigating the case. Ousley hasn't been found yet.
