Man arrested while trying to smuggle contraband into jail

Johnson County sheriff's deputies say they caught a man in the act of trying to smuggle cigarettes and drugs into the Big Sandy Detention Center.

The deputy says he saw William and Laura Howard drive up and put two cigarette cartons underneath a trailer next to the jail.

Officials say the trailer is used to haul commissary items.
The deputy confronted the couple and got the cigarette cartons.

"He found that there were narcotics inside the cigarette package which was intended for this gentleman's brother that was incarcerated in the detention center." Says Johnson County Sheriff Bill Witten.

Police say they also found drugs in the car.

William and Laura Howard face drug possession and promoting contraband charges.

The two were booked in the jail.
