Tower As Built Over Former Quarry; Won't Stand Straight

SAND GAP, Ky. (AP) - Italy has its leaning tower of Pisa and Kentucky has its leaning tower of Sand Gap.

The Jackson County leaner is a water tower that was recently
constructed at the site of a former quarry off U.S. 421. Officials
are concerned about the Kentucky tower falling on somebody and it
can't be used for water storage in its present condition.

So, a demolition company is to be asked by Jackson County
officials today what it would cost to bring the leaner down. A
state highway official says the tower was built on a hillside and
is sinking about one inch per hour.

Yesterday, a truck from Caldwell Tanks, the company that built
the tower, had rolled partway into a sink hole that opened near the
tower. A detour has been put in place to keep motorists away from
the area.
