Johnson County officers investigating "spoof" calls

Several people are reporting phone calls from the Johnson County Sheriff's Department, asking them to pay off 2008 parking tickets.

The problem is that officers say they are not the ones calling.

"They all were stating that they received a phone call from the johnson county sheriff, and that's what it showed on the ID, and gave our number from the office," said Sergeant Matt Ferguson, of the Johnson County Sheriff's Department.

Ferguson says most of the 12 reported calls concern parking tickets from 2008 in the city of Paintsville.

"We don't call someone for parking tickets, nor do we issue parking tickets in the city," said Ferguson.

He says the offenders have violated several federal laws, including impersonating a police officer, which is a Class D felony in Johnson County.

"On two occasions, the person asked who am I talking to, and they'll say Johnson County Sheriff Bill Witten," said Ferguson.

Ferguson says the department and the Noralite Telephone Company is investigating the calls, but do not know who or how many callers are involved.

He says if you receive one of these spoof calls, write down the time it was made, and contact the Sheriff's Department at 606-789-3411.
