People who say they know the young parents that are the subjects of the abuse investigation, were caught off guard by the allegations.
“It surprises me they would actually do something like that .Doesn’t seem like something they would do at all,” said a neighbor who asked not to be identified.
But police say the 21 year old mother and father basically beat their 1 and 2 year old daughters.
“It’s our understanding through the investigation that the children were being struck, physically, both with fists and belts,” said Lt. Shannon Smith with Somerset Police.
Social services and law enforcement were called to 202 1/2 College Street after police say they received a complaint about the toddlers’ welfare. Then….a neighbor says she saw the children taken away…and she says it was interesting to her that the kids were not crying for their mother.
Both parents were lodged in the Pulaski County Detention Center and charged with criminal abuse first degree. They declined an offer to give their side of the story from jail. Their children are now in the custody of foster care.
“My understanding is that the foster care they are in, it’s being done by really capable and good hearted people,” said Lt. Smith.
The children were checked out by medical personnel and are doing fine now. Police are still investigating why they kids were hurt.
“What the root cause of the behavior was, we may never know,” said Lt. Smith.
Police say the children suffered bruises and cuts to their torsos, legs, head and face areas.
