Woman Pleads Not Guilty To Child Abuse Charges

Another court case moved forward Friday. Shaunna Childers pleaded not guilty to charges related to the alleged abuse of her baby. The Johnson County woman's boyfriend is accused of stuffing baby wipes down her son's throat.

The hearing didn't last very long, just a couple of minutes and Shaunna Childers didn't speak in court. She let her attorney talk for her.

Attorney Steve Owens entered a not guilty plea to the child abuse charges and asked for a trial. Police say it was her boyfriend, Jonathan Crum, who actually put the wipes in her baby's throat, but Childers is charged because officers claim she left her child alone with him, so they say she is also responsible, but Childers says she's not at fault and plans to fight the accusations.

"She's presumed innocent until proven guilty and in the preliminary hearing, showed evidence that was very favorable to her, I thought and we'll have a trial and see what happens," said Defense Attorney Steve Owens.

The judge scheduled a pre-trial next month to discuss the upcoming trial and possibly schedule it.

Owens says the baby is recovered and he is doing fine. Owens says family court is deciding if Childers can see her baby.
