Kentucky secretary of state diagnosed with breast cancer

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Secretary of State Elaine Walker has been
diagnosed with breast cancer after a routine mammogram.
The 60-year-old Walker told reporters on Wednesday that because
of early detection, the prognosis is excellent.
Walker said she has begun meeting with physicians to determine
the best course of treatment, but that surgery appears to be a
certainty.
Walker, accompanied by her husband, Dorian, informed her staff
early Wednesday before announcing the diagnosis publicly in a news
conference. She used the occasion to encourage all women to get
routine mammograms and to perform self-exams to catch the disease early.
Appointed to the job by Gov. Steve Beshear, Walker has 2 ½
months remaining in her term. She said she plans to maintain a
regular work schedule, particularly with the general election
approaching.
