Two killed in crashes on Kentucky roads during Thanksgiving holiday

As drivers took to the roads across the state for Thanksgiving, Kentucky State Police say only two people were killed in wrecks. They say that number is usually much higher.

"Ideally we'd only have zero on our roadways and we realize that's probably not a realistic goal, however it is encouraging to us. It's kind of a silver lining, if you will. Typically on average in our holiday periods, we see five to ten, sometimes even higher than that. Obviously we're trying to get to that zero mark, but a lot of times that number is higher. To be down to two is a silver lining for this holiday period," says Lt. David Jude of the Kentucky State Police.

The two deadly accidents happened on Thursday here in Central Kentucky. In Mercer County, Jose Terendo Navarro-Meza was killed when another car ran a light and t-boned his car. In Fayette County, Benito Hernandez-Duran was killed when his car slammed into a tree on Yarnallton Pike. Alcohol is suspected in that wreck.

Police say while they're happy with the low number, their thoughts are with the families of those killed. Kentucky State Police say while they'd love to take credit for the low number, the responsibility is in the hands of the general public

"I wish I could give credit to enforcement campaigns, educational campaigns, engineering campaigns, but really the credit has to go to the people that are driving their cars on the roadways. When they make better decisions behind the wheel of a car, we see fatalities drop in the state of Kentucky," says Jude.

State Police say they'll also step up patrols during the Christmas and New Year period, looking for speeders, aggressive drivers, and drunk drivers.
