Officials Warning Of Phone Scam

Mysterious calls asking for donations to bogus charities. That's what some people are dealing with in one Eastern Kentucky city.

Sheriff Fred Yaden says he's gotten complaints throughout Laurel County about calls asking to donate to the Amber Alert program or a youth program with the sheriff's department. Yaden says in many cases, the caller even identifies the individual by name.

"We are not soliciting money from any citizen in the Laurel County area. Amber Alert is already in place as you know it's state wide, it's nation wide. This is nothing but a scam," Yaden said.

Sheriff Yaden says the scammers seem to prey on the elderly.

Anyone who thinks they've been scammed should report it to the Laurel County Sheriff's Office at 606-864-6600.
