High speed chase ends in an arrest

Posted: Sun 9:33 AM, Jul 22, 2012

A man was arrested Friday around midnight after allegedly attempting to run over two Barbourville Police Officers with his car.

Police said Johnnie Paul Smith attempted to strike two officers manning the check point.

The officers were able to jump out of the way when Smith drove toward them.

He then drove toward another officer who was questioning a driver.

Police fired shots at the car in order to stop Smith from hitting the unsuspecting officer.

The officers then proceeded in a high speed chase for approximately eight miles until a officer forced Smith to crash into a cruiser.

The cruiser had minor damage, and Smith was transported to the hospital and released without treatment.

Smith was charged with attempted murder of an officer, driving under the influence, evading police, and other charges.
