Coroner rules child death in beanbag was accident

Posted: Tue 2:41 AM, Nov 27, 2012

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn says the death of a 3-year-old girl who apparently crawled inside a beanbag chair was an accident.

Ginn had said after Mia Kylee Mills Simmerman was found inside the beanbag in September that she died of asphyxia or suffocation. The Lexington Herald-Leader says Ginn said Monday that the death was an accident.

The girl, who was the youngest grandchild of state Rep. Terry Mills of Lebanon, died Sept. 12. He said at the time she may have climbed inside the beanbag during a game of hide and seek.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said in 1995 there had been five deaths from suffocation and at least 27 injuries caused by zipper beanbag chairs, and manufacturers recalled millions of beanbags.
