WILLIAMSON, W.Va. (AP) - Amid calls for their resignations, Mingo County's prosecutor and a county commissioner say they won't step down.

Prosecutor Michael Sparks and Commissioner Greg "Hootie" Smith also say they are continuing to cooperate with a federal investigation in the county.

The Charleston Daily Mail (http://bit.ly/19lggPn ) reports that the officials' statements came Wednesday in response to residents' calls for their resignations during a County Commission meeting.

In August, a federal grand jury charged Mingo County Circuit Court Judge Michael Thornsbury with trying to frame the husband of his secretary for several crimes. Commissioner Dave Baisden was charged in a separate case with extortion.

There also is a state investigation of alleged election law violations in the county.
